A fire in a sports shoe warehouse in the northern part of downtown Mexico City led authorities to evacuate at least 500 people, as reported by the head of the city government, Martí Batres, on Thursday. The official stated on his X account, formerly Twitter, that there are more than 40 tankers on-site, and there are no reports of injuries or fatalities. He added that firefighters and personnel from the government, security, and risk management and civil protection secretariats are addressing the emergency.
Separately, the Cuauhtémoc borough, where the downtown area is located, reported in a statement that the fire started around 4:00 p.m. local time.
The smoke column generated by the fire in the Plaza Oasis market extended for dozens of meters and was visible for several kilometers.
The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the fire, as reported in a statement, and is seeking possible witnesses and surveillance camera images to determine what happened.
