The Air Traffic Controllers Union, Sintecna, is set to protest next week, potentially causing delays for both incoming and outgoing flights at the Juan Santamaría International Airport (AIJS).
The union’s grievances stem from what they describe as “essential shortcomings” that hinder their work efficiency. Specifically, they demand 54 additional positions, an extra 15 days of annual leave to combat fatigue from their stressful jobs, and a salary increase which they claim was provided to other DGAC departments in 2022 but not to them. Despite a meeting between Sintecna’s board and representatives from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC), no agreement was reached.
MOPT later issued a statement detailing their ongoing four-month negotiations with the union, assuring that equipment needs would be met but indicating that the creation of new positions would be reviewed by the Budgetary Authority of the Ministry of Finance in the upcoming year.
