(CNN Español) — Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported on Tuesday that the 12th cold front of the 2023-2024 season continues to cool the territory and will cause torrential rains in some states of the country.
In its update at 7 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m., Miami time), the SMN detailed that cold front 12, which is “stationary over the southeast of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula,” will interact with “a low-pressure channel over the southwest Gulf of Mexico,” bringing rains to various states.
- Chiapas, Tabasco, and Veracruz will experience torrential rains (150 to 250 mm)
- Campeche, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan will record heavy rains (75 to 150 mm)
- Puebla will have very strong rains (50 to 75 mm)
- Hidalgo and San Luis Potosí will receive strong rains (25 to 50 mm)
- In areas of Aguascalientes, Mexico City, Coahuila, Colima, Durango, Mexico State, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, and Zacatecas, showers are forecasted (5 to 25 mm)
According to the forecast, the most intense precipitation will be accompanied by lightning and hail that can cause landslides, increased river and stream levels, as well as overflowing and flooding in the mentioned states.
“North” event The SMN added that the polar air mass associated with the front will create a cold to very cold environment “with possible fog banks in the north, northeast, center, east, and southeast of Mexico.” The event is also expected to register wind gusts of 80 to 100 km/h and waves of three to five meters high on the coasts of Veracruz and the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
