Conflict Between Farmers and Protesters Escalates in Chiriquí

For the past 12 days, the Interamerican Highway in the San Félix district has remained completely blocked.

Farmers in the province of Chiriquí have reached their breaking point due to ongoing road closures. This became evident on Thursday when they engaged in physical altercations with protesters from Tierras Altas. The Tierras Altas demonstrators had been staging a protest at this location against the mining contract law.

The farmers claim that food is going to waste because of road blockades and, for this reason, they forcibly reopened the highway.

Videos circulating on social media show farmers picking up stones and removing tents that had been set up in the middle of the roads to clear the way for their trucks.

These confrontations occurred after a young man was tragically killed in a traffic accident on Wednesday night. The accident took place on the Panamerican Highway at the intersection of Horconcitos in San Lorenzo, Chiriquí.

In response, authorities from the Municipal Public Ministry of San Lorenzo conducted the removal of the body, and police sources confirmed the apprehension of the alleged driver involved in the accident. –
