On the morning of this Monday, March 11, several sectors of the city woke up to a strong smell of smoke due to a new fire in the Cerro Patacón landfill area.

Lieutenant Colonel of the Fire Department, Angel Delgado, stated on Radio Panamá that at 2:30 am, the National Police reported a fire at the top of Cerro Patacón, immediately dispatching units from Carrasquilla, San Miguelito, and Calidonia.

Delgado mentioned that the affected area is extensive, and since early morning, they have been working to contain the fire. Machinery from the Authority of Urban and Household Cleaning is already in place for the dumping of soil, along with additional personnel. The IDAAN (National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewage Systems) with its personnel is also present, and aerial incursions are expected with a helicopter from the National Aeronaval Service.

The strong breeze has been a factor that helped spread the fire, and efforts are underway to contain the flames. The police are also maintaining control in the communities surrounding Cerro Patacón.
