Work will be carried out in 2 phases, the first in the San José-Alajuela direction.
Lanamme warned in May 2022 about lack of maintenance on the section.

The National Road Council (Conavi) will commence intervention work on the Alajuela radial road from August 21, 2023. This project will unfold in two phases: the first will address the concrete slab repairs in the San José-Alajuela direction, with the same work planned for the Alajuela-San José direction next year, pending budget allocation for 2024.

This radial, named Francisco J. Orlich, serves as a vital link between the Juan Santamaría International Airport, the General Cañas highway, and central Alajuela. A report by the National Laboratory of Materials and Structural Models (Lanamme) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) has highlighted the urgent need for repair. Studies conducted in 2021 and 2022 revealed that 139 slabs towards Alajuela and 167 towards the airport were in a deteriorated condition.

Only the current slabs in good condition will be retained. The plan is to remove the damaged ones and pour new concrete, supplemented by appropriate signaling and the installation of reflectors. Many of the damaged slabs have linear and transverse cracking, fragmentation, or aggregate detachment. From 2011 to 2019, over ₡157 million were allocated to maintenance efforts.

Lanamme emphasized that despite being one of the main access routes to Alajuela, with an average daily traffic of around 30,000 vehicles, the road has received insufficient maintenance in recent years.
