In preparation for the annual pilgrimage to the Basílica de Los Ángeles in Cartago, several roads located east of San José will be closed to facilitate the movement of pilgrims. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) announced that vehicular traffic restrictions could begin as early as noon. The affected routes include Fuente de La Hispanidad to the La Galera intersection in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, with the closure possibly starting at 5:00 p.m. However, transverse passage on the main route that passes through the church in San Pedro de Montes de Oca will be permitted to the east. Additionally, the national route 251, also known as “calle vieja” to Tres Ríos, in La Unión, will be closed to vehicular traffic, allowing only pedestrians after midday.
Given the expected influx of pilgrims to Cartago on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Costa Rican Red Cross (CRC) provided safety recommendations to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience. They advise participants to bring at least two pairs of previously used shoes, avoid walking in high-traffic areas, and stay hydrated throughout the journey. The CRC will have more than 1,200 volunteers stationed along the route to provide assistance and aid in case of emergencies. So far, they have attended to 483 patients during the pilgrimage days, and this number is expected to increase as the hours pass.
