It essentially consists of entering a modern recreation of their workshops in France to observe the work of up to 6 generations of artisans who meticulously craft each object.
According to its website: “Hermès In The Making brings together artisans from nearly 10 métiers (crafts) of the house to offer a preview of their expert techniques and exclusive knowledge.”
Since 2021, it has been presented in cities such as Copenhagen, Singapore, Kyoto, Lille, Chicago, Bangkok, and now, the latest one: Mexico City.
What is in the Hermès interactive exhibition?
Hermès has several workshops around France to enhance the savoir-faire (know-how), often linked to traditions or historical regions. Therefore, you will find several stations with live demonstrations of the artisanal production process of some of their items.
For example, you can learn about the process of making a leather saddle, the first item that Hermès marketed.
They will also show you how they paint Limoges porcelain tableware, how leather is used to make a pair of gloves in Haute Vienne, silk printing in Lyon, and the step-by-step process to create the iconic Kelly bag, used by celebrities such as actress and Monegasque princess Grace Kelly and singer Madonna.
Don’t miss the meticulous work of the watchmakers, who with such caution, patience, and the help of a monocular loupe, are responsible for ensuring that the watch movements function perfectly.
In addition, interactive screens with information about materials, items, and the history of Hermès have been installed. There is music and film projections.
The expo is also about getting hands-on with various workshops, such as screen printing, a coloring area, and more.
